Happiness is a Choice Week 3: Hungering and Thirsting for Righteousness
Series: Happiness is a Choice: Discovering What Actually Makes Us Happy
Key Passage: Matthew 5:6
Share a time in your life when you were really hungry or thirsty. What was the situation? How did you respond?
Read Matthew 5:1-16. Now read 5:6 only. Righteousness is about being in conformity to God’s standards in thought, word and action; to love what God loves and hate what God hates.
What are a few examples of things we tolerate or enjoy that God hates?
What are a few examples of things we are indifferent about that God loves?
Notice that, in the process of hungering and thirsting, we are satisfied. All we have to do is desire Godly things, and God satisfies us. Everything doesn’t have to work out in our favor for us to be satisfied. Talk about why that is such great news.
Discuss things we try to fill ourselves with apart from God to try to become satisfied? What is the result? Why?
Discuss what it looks like to hunger and thirst after God’s righteousness today.
Discuss the implications of the Gospel: Jesus was the only truly righteous person. Jesus makes us righteous. When we truly understand this, we will spend our lives conforming our desires to what God desires, not to be made right with him, but because we have already been made right with him.
