Discuss the Apostle Paul’s current circumstances. (2nd Timothy 1:12 and 15. 2:9 and 4:9-16.) Paul is in chains. He is abandoned. He is treated like a criminal. He’s cold and wishes someone would bring him a coat. He invites Timothy to “join me in suffering.” Based on Paul’s circumstances, respond to that invitation.
Read 2 Timothy 2:1. Define “grace”. What does it mean to be “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus”?
Discuss other ways a “good soldier” might be able to please his commanding officer besides combat. (2 Timothy 2:3-4)
Read 2nd Timothy 2:5. Respond to the idea of competing according to the rules. What are some good rules for a Christian to follow? Can Christian rules be good? Consider rules like “love one another”, “pray without ceasing”, “make disciples”. How can those kinds of rules help us bring the gospel to bear as we are confronted with suffering?
Remember Jesus. (2nd Timothy 2:8) How can remembering a resurrected Jesus change our view on the critical matters that we are to engage in? (2nd Timothy 2:10)
