The Folly of Kings - Week 2: The King Who Rejected Wise Counsel and Divided the Kingdom

Series: The Folly of Kings

Key Passage: 1 Kings 12:1-21

Speaker: Nate Wagner

Getting Started

What are the things you most value? Why are they important to you?

Have you ever followed bad advice? If so, what happened?

Read Proverbs 3:1-10 out loud. What were some core values given in these verses?

Study    Read I Kings 12:1-21 Together

Discuss the request the people made to King Rehoboam and their rationale.

Compare the counsel offered by the elders and that offered by the young men.

What does Rehoboam’s decision reflect about the posture of his heart?

How did his decision determine the direction of Israel?  How should that impact our own decision-making process?

1 Kings 11-14 tells the story of the kings Rehoboam and Jeroboam. Both of them made foolish and evil decisions based on embracing poor counsel and rejecting wise counsel. Talk about the variety of mistakes made by both Kings because of listening to the wrong counsel.

Application

Respond:  What our hearts most value sets the course for our lives.

Where you’ve set your heart is reflected in the things that are most important to you. Is your heart set on something worth seeking? In light of what you want, what do you need to choose to value?

What is your heart set on right now? How is it affecting the direction of your life?  How do you think your life might be different if your heart was set on seeking God’s best for your life?
