Wait Here: Week 8 - Know Your Enemy and Your Hope
Series: Wait Here: When God's expectations do battle with ours
Speaker: Nate Wagner
Two dangerous and wrong responses to the reality and activity of the devil are to over-emphasize his power and activity, and to ignore his reality and activity. Discuss the dangers of these extreme responses.
Why is alertness so necessary in living the Christian life? Discuss some of the possible dangers of being passive and apathetic psychologically and spiritually.
Study I Peter 5:8-14
What does Peter tell us in verse 8 about who the devil is? What are some names or pictures that are used in Scripture to describe the devil? (John 8:44, 14:30; 2 Cor. 11:4; Eph. 2:2; Rev. 12:9)
What does the name “adversary” tell us about the devil? When the adversary comes against you, who is your best defender? (John 8:1-11)
What is a lion’s intent when it goes prowling around? In what way does the devil prowl like a lion? What is the devil’s intent for you? (John 10:10)
What are some of the tactics (that you have seen or experienced) that the devil uses to destroy the lives of people?
1 Peter 5:9 gives us the proper response to the devil. What might it look like to resist him? What tools could you use, or would you use?
Why is it significant that the focus of 1 Pet. 5:10-11 is all on God’s ability instead of our own? How should this give us confidence as we seek to resist the devil?
How certain is the promised transformation of vs. 10? What do we do when we don’t “feel” like this is happening?
Identify a specific area of vulnerability you currently struggle with (deception, temptation, accusation) and spend some time thinking about how it has affected you to this point and how confidence in God’s power and promises can help you better resist the devil in this area.
Identify a passage of Scripture that brings clarity or comfort to an area and seek to memorize it.
Invite a close friend or family member to support and encourage you as you seek to resist the devil in this specific area of life.
Pray that we would wake up to the reality of the devil and be watchful for the attacks of the devil in our lives, our families, and our church.
Pray that we would recognize Satan’s tactics, resist the attacks, and rest in God’s power and promises.
Express gratitude to God that He promises that He will complete His good work in us.
